Mcx Rattler 300 - Sig Sauer has done it again. The Sig Sauer MCX Rattler in .300 Blackout is a great platformer that makes me cry inside. It's a gun that wins big on style points, but I'm held back by one problem. Definitely worth buying, but it should come with a disclaimer.
I'll be honest by saying that I'm not much for pre-built rifles or AR pistols these days, because I like putting things together and having some control over the building process. It's usually a little cheaper.

I bought the pistol configuration of the MCX Rattler because I didn't want to wait for the tax code for my short chain rifle (SBR). However, the Rattler looks pretty cool. It's compact and easy to store in a bag or under a car seat. I actually keep it next to my bed because the short barrel length (5”) is perfect for maneuvering the tight hallways and doorways of my home. It looks really nice with an M-LOK grip covered by an obviously dirty stabilizer bar. It is inconsistent and confusing. I can't stand it. Also, the non-action part of this AR pistol is solid.

. I don't like the 9lb trigger pull on my rifles or AR pistols or really any gun. Makes it more accurate to shoot at long distances. This is one of the problems that really plagues the rifle. I definitely need to replace it for durability.
In retrospect, the accuracy was pretty good. I threw a little red dot pattern and really only tried to do fifty yards. Clusters are tight with three-inch clusters when photographed randomly. In the past, I was able to hold 3 MOA while sitting down and focusing hard. Unless I'm usually using Low Power Variable Optics (LPVO) or any magnification optics, there's clearly something wrong with these things.
I don't know what else to ask other than that. Ergonomic, movable and ultra-quiet with subsonic arrows and press. Plus, this gun was originally designed for military and special operations use, so it definitely packs a punch. I managed to find one that was practical, but while it didn't look great, there are plenty of cheaper options out there. I wouldn't say buy it now, but I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you pull the trigger here. Guys, I hope you understand that this is a list of guns I'd like to own one day, but always followed by "if I win the lottery." I have a few of those guns on my list, but when I saw the new MCX Rattler from SIG Sawyer, it was new on the market and it got me excited. I checked it out last year at SHOT Show and the NRA's annual convention. I always thought it was a useful system and got interested in photography again. Thankfully, I found one and had the opportunity to buy it, so I did! Let's see what we think of it after a year.
First, the gun packs a huge punch for such a small package. The total length from the mouth to the tip of the bow is 16 inches. 300 in blackout, with a 5.5-inch barrel chambered. The camera weighs only 5 pounds without optics. A very small tank built like a tank, but not bad at all. I love that SIG has always put QD mounting points on all rifles and pistols. The mounts made the point much easier to shoot and work with. I load my rifle with Trijicon RMR in Anvl Ukon mount.

Anvl Ukon has a visible system on the mount iron, so there is no need for spare irons on the gun. I thought the initial concept was weird, but after using it in the PDW system, I think there is no better option on the market right now. I was originally interested in this optic setup because there are many special forces teams around the world that use the MCX Rattler with the Trijicon RMR on Mount Ukon. It's easy to see why they went with this setup! I shot a single point in 5 rounds of the Surefire M300 Mini Scout Weapon Light and called it good.
I have put about 3,700 rounds through the MCX Rattler so far and it is 100% reliable. It has an average group of 1.5” at 100 yards. Not that impressive until you consider that it only has a 5.5 inch barrel. It's an absolute blast to shoot and the recoil is very manageable. I was surprised at how easy it was to hit the target during training sessions or cross-country shooting, and even though it's such a small package, the gun doesn't blow you out of the muzzle or create massive bursts of fire. My gun came with SIG's three-way flash hider and it does a good job of reducing muzzle flash.
There are a few things to get used to when it comes to the MCX Rattler. First, I'm not a big fan of the little charging handle on the gun. I fully understand that this is a PDW weapon, so everything has been streamlined and minimized as much as possible. The charging handle is very compact, perfect for popping out of a hidden pocket. The downside is that the weapon is more difficult to use when charged. I changed a few times on the highway and my pimples were raw by the end of the day, but it wasn't a deal breaker.
I got a Geisel Super X charger handle for the Rattler and that solved the problem. All that remained of the gun was the collapsing gun post. The rest is adjustable, which is a plus, but I prefer the side pocket, which is easier to deploy. The collapsible stack is really well built, but you need two hands to deploy it quickly. The side-folding bow requires only one hand to deploy quickly. This is my personal preference, but it's a very minor issue on an excellent weapon. Both of these problems are easily solved with the charging handle and SB Tactical side folding bracket.

When I first got the MCX Rattler, I was very worried that it wouldn't live up to my expectations. After owning and driving it, I am happy with its performance that exceeded my expectations. It just runs and packs a lot of ammunition into a small package. I love that I can toss it into a strap bag and carry the Rattler around with no fuss or hassle.
Maybe I'll buy the new Vertx sling bag for the Rattler and post what I think about it. For the next 6 months, I plan to travel with myself.
