Questions Regarding Gigabit Loyalty Upgrade

I'm looking for feedback from users with experience with the new Gigabit internet connection - speed, quality of service. I get varying speeds with my 100Mb connection. So how credible is this claim? My current 2 year contract is less than 30 days old and I was asked to pay an extra $30.00 for benefits.

If you are getting speeds other than 100Mbps, moving to 1Gbps will not solve the problem. It is better to fix your 100Mbps service first, before you plan to go to Gigabit. A fast connection can exacerbate the problem, if it's due to bad Fiber optics, for example. Or because of the Wi-Fi problem, then nothing can be changed, and you just lose money unless you plan to upgrade the Wi-Fi equipment on both sides.

People are seeing mixed results with the Gigabit product. For some, 940Mbps up and down is what you'll see, and that provides Gigabit service, based on Ethernet above. Some people see different results, because they are on larger PONs (Remember, each FiOS link is part of a PON, which is a Passive Optical Network. The PON connects to a port in the Office OLT - Optical Termination Line). Verizon currently uses GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology, which is limited to 2.4 Gbps downstream, 1.2 Gbps upstream. A PON can share bandwidth from 1 house to 64 houses. Verizon expects more than just a 1Gbps Ethernet port on the OLT to restore bandwidth - they'll probably sell you 1Gbps. So with that being said, people have reported issues on the loading side of things with a slight shift, which is not surprising. Verizon provided a speed bump to PON by design, assuming (and based on statistics) that people would click download before uploading. After all, you're not guaranteed Gigabit, but the connection should provide decent performance for $200 or less, which is better than what Cable is offering. Unless you are in a Comcast/XFinity area where you are within 500 ft of where Comcast is installing "Gigabit Pro", a true Metro Ethernet product.

In the future, if Verizon moves to GEPON, it can Symmetrical 10Gbps, or NG-PON2, can 10Gbps down, 2.5Gbps up, or a new technology, you will see even faster 1Gbps on FiOS.

I have a 940/870 that Verizon advertised. Yes, the gig speed is 1024/1024 but the reality is that you will slow down a bit. As I said, there are many reasons for it.

Here Is Verizon's 5g Network Downloading At Gigabit Speeds

I have had Fios Quantum service for 2.5 months. I am very sad now. I have a computer connected directly to the Fios router and I get slower internet than my previous Optimum 50mb plan. I have tried all the suggested changes. No help yet. For WiFi, very poor. The signal is weaker than my old Optimum driver, which is 3 years old. The technician who did my installation did an excellent job. Cleaning the windshield is a breeze and actually takes time to set up. However, it is not as advertised. Fios speed from the router shows 800-900 for up and down. This is a fake reader because nothing is faster than my old setup. Free downloads are about 90 mb. No one knows how fast it is, but this one is 20 times faster than the first group. I'm going to call Fios for help, but if that's the best, I can come back. (although I don't like Optimum).

I should add that I get constant stress from my family. Internet is slow and frequent. The TV is also dim, although I lost a lot of channels and it was difficult to navigate. Overall, as of today I would rate the Fios Quantum a C-. That's grace.

I hope they understand your problem as I will be upgrading to Gigabit next week from 50mps installed. A helpful tip for your PC: There are settings that can be changed on PCs to optimize them for Internet access, the speed you purchased from FIOS, etc. settings, fix Registry errors, clean unnecessary files, etc. There is a free trial version, but full versions are usually paid. Your WIFI problems are another matter; I use the Ethernet cable from the router for everything - except one phone.

If you have the problem, the router needs to be replaced to be sure.

My mother-in-law used Avast software yesterday and after running it, the Microsoft Runtime Environment got corrupted and other things disappeared. It took me all day and as I write this I'm installing 132 OS updates. I reinstalled his files and everything works fine. Think about it. 8 am to 9:02 pm and counting. So, don't use any software to fix anything.

If the router shows good speed and you get bad performance from your PC, there are several possibilities:

1) Are you running fast on speedtest.verizon.net? If not, the router will try and verify the access speed that Verizon (and other carriers) can guarantee.

2) If you are working and still getting porn, you may have a network problem (the PC is directly connected to the Verizon router) or there is a problem with your PC. If this is new, then it is a driver problem. If it is more, it may not support Gig speed.

3) For wifi, does your old router support 5G? If not, you may be able to connect to the G1100 with 5G, which is faster, as opposed to 2.4G. Give each site a different SSID to see if you get different performance.

4) If you have a mobile device, download an app called WiFi Analyzer. It can help you check the wifi for problems like interference (the old router is on a different path than the G1100 may be affected) and can check the signal strength.
