In a statement to the USNI, Navy spokesman Cmdr. Reann Mommsen declined to comment on the investigation. A message left with a spokeswoman for Smith from the USNI was not immediately returned.
Former Navy SEAL MCPON Steven Giordano took early retirement from his position in 2018 following an investigation in which sailors accused him of creating an environment with toxic leadership and degrading subordinates.
A defense official familiar with the investigation said Smith's alleged misconduct was weaker than Giordano's. "It's not even comparable," the official told the USNI.
USNI understands that the IG investigation may not affect Smith's planned retirement this year from the MCPON role, which he has held since Giordano left in 2018.
