Book Tells The Inside Story Of \
Released on 16 May 1986, it came at a time when naval aviation was very much in the public eye, with transport aircraft taking part in strikes against Libya the previous month as part of Operation El Dorado Canyon. The combination of these two events led to a significant increase in recruitment at the time and the film's memorable soundtrack, scenes and lines -
— suffered, though the F-14 Tomcat went from front-line fighter to museum piece, and the Navy's Combat Weapons School (TOP GUN) moved from near San Diego to the desert around Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada.
A Talon T-38A assigned to the Naval Combat Weapons School is pictured outside the TOPGUN hangar at Naval Air Station (NAS) Miramar, California, in 1974. The Talon was one of the types of aircraft used as an attack for school training. Note the silhouettes of MiG aircraft shot down during the Vietnam War painted on the outside of the hangar. Dan Pedersen was a US Navy aviator (joined in 1953) and is credited as the driving force behind the creation of the Miramar Naval Air Station Combat Weapons School in 1969. Navy leaders chose him for this role because of his experiences in the air battles over Vietnam which provided him with a deep understanding of the problems with American tactics and equipment (weapons at the time had a 90% failure rate).
Captain Snodgrass' F-14a career spanned over a quarter of a century, during which time he became the top Tomcat pilot with over 4800 hours on the type and 1200 plus landings. The squadron's missions included VF-124 (Initial Training), VF-142, VF-101 (Instructor), VF-41 (CAG LSO), VF-43 (Edgy Pilot), VF-143, VF-101 (XO / Instructor ) , VF-33 (XO/CO). As commander of VF-33, he led the squadron into combat during Desert Storm. His combat tactics included conducting 34 attacks in western and central Iraq. In 1994, he assumed command of Fighter Wing Atlantic and F-14 squadrons at NAS Oceana. In 1995, the West Coast squadrons were jointly stationed in Oceana and gained control of the entire Tomcat community.
