This will be the first flight of the BA A380 to Chicago. BA will continue to fly to Chicago twice daily.
Ba294 Aircraft Type
Currently, this route is operated by Boeing 747 and 777. The A380 will be a major upgrade over the recently refurbished Boeing 747, which will continue to operate on the route, particularly in terms of premium economy and first class seating.

A380 flights to Chicago are now on sale at ba.com. Please note that A380 operations may be subject to seasonal adjustments.
The BA A380 currently operates select flights to Boston, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, Singapore, Vancouver and Washington. There are also flights to Miami in winter and to Vancouver in summer.
The latest addition to BA's A380 network will come from aircraft serving its existing network. BA has taken delivery of all 12 A380s it has ordered from Airbus.
The airline has an option to buy seven more planes from Airbus, but that has not been exercised. Willie Walsh, chief executive of BA parent company International Airlines Group, has expressed interest in leasing second-hand A380s for BA and other airlines in the IAG Group, but nothing has come of it.

Update: Airbus A380 has been converted to BA297/BA296 flights since the announcement. The release date has also been changed to Friday, May 4, 2018. You are here: Home / Travel / Chicago and Hamburg 2 / Leisure and Business – BA294 Chicago to Heathrow in World Traveler Plus

I went under the jet bridge and was greeted. I turned right and passed Club World into the World Traveler Plus cabin.
So, let's look at the seat - compared to the old seat, it's not bad, and it's closer to the bulkhead than the old World Traveler Plus seat. It has a deep recline (which shocked me more than late in the flight). The seat also has an in-seat guide.

Pre-departure soft drinks of choice of water, orange juice or champagne. No prizes for what I'm after:
The British Airways safety video was played (if the video needed to be changed it would be that one - I swear it no longer fits in some way) and soon our BA294 was taxiing towards the runway.
Which runway - I don't know. It's a running joke at O'Hare they love building more runways...and forgetting to add more terminal space...
Eventually our plane found a runway it liked and the BA294 fired up its engines for Heathrow.

After the plane took off safely, we crossed the north side of Chicago and left Lake Michigan.
At one point, I sat on the right side of a plane flying east, so I had a great view of downtown Chicago as the plane took off.
When the plane is in flight, it's time to connect with the world with the Thales IFE system.
The IFE system has both a touchscreen and a manual interface - I use the touchscreen most of the time.

First (and one of the reasons I love flying home with British Airways) is that I get to watch BBC World News. After watching CNN/CNBC and other US news, there is never a break in having the news read to you in a reassuring accent.
After being exposed to the world in a reassuring accent, it was time for entertainment, and after dinner in the cabin, I was sent to bed. Thankfully, The Bang Theory covers all of these touchpoints.
That's when I realized how deep these recrow seats are. It occurred to him to fly United on a 767 economy class.
So, the seat has some real recline, but it puts the monitor in front of you "in your face". I think a tilt or less angle might help - the screen is there and legroom isn't compromised.

Let's look at the travel package, yes - there are signs of a downgrade. Gone are the plastic wallets, replaced by plastic duffle bags.
For anyone who drove a World Traveler a few years ago, you will be familiar with this kit. british airways at least
Looking at the tray, mozzarella and tomatoes were put on the side (sorry, not my favorite combo despite the abundance of umami in the world). The beef was well done (how I like my beef) but not too hard to cut (always a good sign) and the accompaniments were fresh. A roll is a roll, and the Black Forest Cake Pudding is sweet.
After the meal, the lights went out and I took advantage of the main reason for joining World Traveler Plus - to get some sleep
Pleasure And Business
I obviously missed the breakfast service so I slept well. Flying in that awesome seven-and-a-half hour region, honestly, missing muffins and coffee isn't such a bad thing. I wake up to the outside world and the sunshine of a new day.
Seeing the British Isles, the crew cleaned the engine room prior to arrival and soon it was time to enter the funnel. Because Heathrow needs a stack to manage its arrivals...and a BA294 to queue.
Conditions outside were not good - very little cloud - or fog around. I'm worried that my connecting flight won't land in time.
The plane is in landing configuration... I don't start the video until the wheels hit the ground...
British Airways Unveils Boac Boeing 747
The fog over Heathrow Airport is thinning and disappearing. However, for us - we landed in fog at the airport (as the pilot said - he automatically landed BA294.
There was a slight delay in getting to the gate area - due to fog on takeoff (the plane was parked at the gate, which should have been longer).
Eventually, the plane found a gate in Concourse B and proceeded to the gate. With the engines off, it's time to leave the 777 - the fun part of the trip is over
Overall: I fly World Traveler Plus or Premium because I need to sleep and relax for the rest of the day. And I sleep better, so point on that. However, to be honest, the service was a bit slow. While I don't mind breakfast, I do worry that British Airways cuts down on arrival services too much (as I mentioned when flying the A380 from Washington Dulles to Heathrow).
Flying The Friendly Skies
Again, there are small signs of cuts here and there. That's worrisome in the premium seats.

British Airways Has 49 Aircraft On Order: What Are The Plane Types?
These include reducing the size of first class to eight seats, a new club suite, larger premium economy and 10 identical economy seats. British Airways aims to have most of the planes complete by the end of 2022.

These Airbus A350s have a three-class configuration, not first class. There are 56 Club World "Club Suite" seats, 56 World Traveler Plus seats and 219 World Traveler seats.
BA expects all aircraft to be delivered by the end of 2024. The airline has options for another 36 planes. BA initially planned to add a first-class cabin to future deliveries of the aircraft. That now seems unlikely.
